Brutus : The Hero👑
"Et' U Brute" 🗡️
I know all of us who have read William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" would have quoted theses words whenever we feel betrayed. (Mosty we quote these words to mock our friends)🤣).
But is Brutus actually the Villain?
I'd say no!
Marcus Brutus is indeed a complex and admirable character in Julius Caesar. His actions, though deemed treacherous by many, were motivated by a genuine desire to protect Rome and its people from Caesar's growing power and perceived tyranny .
Brutus's patriotism and selflessness are evident in his willingness to participate in Caesar's assassination, despite his personal affection for him. He believed that Caesar's death was necessary to preserve Rome's republic and prevent the rise of a monarch .
In contrast, Mark Antony's loyalty is called into question, as he prioritizes his devotion to Caesar over his duty to Rome. His impulsive nature and emotional manipulation of the plebeians after Caesar's death demonstrate his focus on personal agendas rather than the greater good.
Caesar's the most ambitious character. I really wonder why Shakespeare even named this play by the Caesar. Probably he made his point clear. To make us realise how ambitiousness leads to our downfall. Caesar's impulsive and arrogant nature ultimately led to his downfall. His refusal to heed warnings from his wife Calpurnia and others sealed his fate.
Octavius Caesar's ambition for power is another theme that resonates throughout the play. His loyalty to Caesar is superficial, as he and Antony begin to vie for control even before Caesar's burial.
Brutus's tragic demise is a poignant reminder of the consequences of his actions. His blind trust in Cassius and his own noble nature led to his downfall. The loss of his wife Portia and his subsequent mental anguish make him the most relatable and human character in the play.
But we can see Brutus was the only real character in Julius Caesar. A true lover of Rome. He might be a man who decieved his close friend, but he is also a patriot who wished to save Rome. But his end couldn't justify his means. An unfortunate soul.
In this world where friendship is just a show, how can you blame Brutus? He had his flaws but his intentions were pure. Brutus' real friend was not Caesar but Rome.
